Going Deeper from Sunday, May 23, 2010

Moving Forward in Hope. Acts 2:1-21 and Acts 2:37-42.
In order to engage the Scripture beyond the sermon, this daily guide is designed to take the sermon home with you. Use it on your own or with a small group. Try it and see how God speaks to you. Pray that God will open your mind and heart to the Word!

Monday – The Promise: Read John 14:15-24. Jesus promised that he would not leave his followers as “orphans.” How does the Spirit of Truth help us to always be with Jesus? Can you think of a time when you needed an advocate or counselor? Out of his great love for us, Jesus has given us his Spirit so that we will never be separated or abandoned by him. The Spirit will strengthen, comfort and defend you no matter what.

Tuesday – Peace: Read John 14:25-31. What role does the Holy Spirit have in teaching us God’s ways for our lives? If you have ever had one of those moments when something just came to your mind or you can’t stop thinking about someone, perhaps that is the Spirit at work within you. Pray that the Spirit will continue to teach and prompt you in every situation. The Spirit of Truth replaced and continued the ministry of Jesus, the Truth. Ask that the abiding presence of God be with you today and every day.

Wednesday - Speaking the Truth: Read John 16:12-15. God wants to communicate with us if we will take the time to listen. How does the Holy Spirit serve the Father in this role? Remember that Jesus and the Spirit came to bring glory to the Father. That is our purpose, too. Listen for the Spirit to inspire and energize you. Ask that the Lord speak to you today – be ready to listen and act!

Thursday – All Who Call Upon the Name of the Lord:  Read Acts 2:17-21 & Acts 2:37-39. The nature of the Gospel is for all people. Look at the inclusive words from the passages – men and women, old and young, everyone, all, whoever. God is teaching us that all humanity is loved and the offer of God’s salvation is for everyone. Forgiveness and mercy is yours if you will turn back to the Lord (repent).   “The promise is for you.” Thank God that no one is too far away from wholeness and healing in Christ’s name.

Friday – Disciples in Community: Read Acts 2:42. What are the four areas that the early church participated in with other believers? As a follower of Jesus today, are you practicing in those 4 areas? What is your plan to learn about the apostles’ teachings, fellowship, breaking of bread (meals with other and Holy Communion) and prayer?

Saturday – Growth: Read Acts 2:41 and Acts 2:47. When the disciples were preaching and living the Gospel of Christ, the response by others was tremendous: “Day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.” What do these statements tell us about our role in growing the church? What should we be doing in order for others to know the saving grace of Jesus Christ? The Spirit will empower us but we play a role as well. What would have happened after the tongues of flame came upon them if the disciples would have played it safe and stayed in the upper room?
