Going Deeper: March 6, 2011

GOING DEEPER – March 6

Monday – Trust: Read Psalm 37:1-7 & Proverbs 3:5. A heart devoted to God learns to trust in the Lord. How do you do with trusting in God? Control is an area that most of us don’t surrender to anyone, let alone one we can’t even see.   Our own understanding keeps us in control all the time. It limits us to only what we know, not what God has in store for us. Pray that you will learn to trust God in all areas of your life, large and small. Ask for the desire to love God with all your heart.

Tuesday – Do not fret: Read Psalm 37:1-7 & Philippians 4:4-7. How much of a worrier are you? Do you spend time and energy fretting over world events, celebrity meltdowns, sport standings and the dramas of daily life? While we want to be informed and aware of current issues, how do they affect your relationship with God? Will you allow God to be God in the present and in the future? The only way to be anxious in nothing is to trust in God in everything. Being thankful, giving all things in prayer and supplication. Emptying yourself of worry and anxiety lets God be God and leaves you with peace. Pray for a situation or person that you are fretting over. Pray to let it go and for the courage to allow God to be God.

Wednesday – Delight in the Lord: Read Psalm 37:1-7. What or who is someone that you truly delight in? Think great joy, satisfaction or pleasure. Is it your grandkids or a hobby? Maybe it’s your best friend’s company? Did you consider God delights in you? God takes great joy, satisfaction and pleasure in spending time with you, listening to you, showing you wisdom and loving on you. Do you feel the same way? When I am in tune with God’s heart, my desire isn’t my own anymore. I want what God wants. When I delight in the Lord, my desires will be gladly given to me.

Thursday – Commitment: Read Psalm 37:1-7 & Proverbs 16:3. On a scale of 1-10, how is your commitment to God? Do you commit whatever you do to God? Do you trust God enough to allow the Lord into all parts of your life even your hardship, pain and difficulty? Many of us can’t find one hour a day to spend with God in prayer, worship reading the Bible, meeting with other Christians or thinking about God. We find loads of time for TV, electronics, hobbies, work and what we like to do. God would be pleased if we gave God the same consideration as any of these. How can you deepen your commitment to God? The Psalmist tells us the reward is right relationship with God that shines like the dawn. I have seen some beautiful sunrises.   What would your love for God be like if it looked like that?

Friday- Be Still: Read Psalm 37:1-7 and Psalm 131. When a baby is content after feeding, it is still and found in the loving arms of his/her mother or father. There isn’t a need to get anymore. Being still involves shutting out our need for what I want and allowing God to be God on God’s terms, not mine. It is why I am humble, patient and not anxious. I am with the Lord. That is all that matters. The wonders of the world and the busyness of life fade away. I am with the Lord. And God is with me. The rest of the world will wait. Pray that you can develop this peace through daily practices of quiet and prayer.

Saturday – Waiting on God. Read Psalm 46:10 & James 4:8. There is an old line, “If you don’t feel close to God, who moved?” God longs to remain with us but we find many ways to shut God out of our lives. Distractions, busyness, noise and having what we want lead the list. Our hearts may be far away from God but we are always wooed to return. Come near to God through being still in your heart and mind. Focused attention on God keeps us from being double minded (an ancient way of saying distracted). Be still and know God with our heart, soul, mind and strength. Pray that God will speak to you in the silence and solitude of your daily practices.
