Pueblo's Feeding the 5000
Non-perishable food and money are collected for distribution through Cooperative Care. Grocery outlets in the area are contacted for participation and people volunteer to distribute grocery bags to shoppers to be filled with groceries. A money jar is made available to make cash donations. The filled bags are brought to Cooperative Care in downtown Pueblo for distribution to needy people in Pueblo County. Safeway, King Soopers, WalMart, Albertsons, Sams, and some local independent stores have been invited to participate. Other Methodist Churches in the Greater Pueblo area are invited to provide volunteers to help. People are asked to serve in 2 hour shifts, 2 people per location. There is also a need for voluteers paste flyers on the grocery bags.
The food collection takes place over a weekend in mid-September. Tens of thousands of pounds of groceries and $Thousands of dollars have been collected in one of these weekends. This is a BIG, concentrated mission effort requiring many volunteers to pull it off. Recruitment of volunteers begins in early July. Also, beginning mid-June, a web site will be available for cash donations.
